Fundamentals of Imagemaking

Using a hands-on approach, this course broke-down the fundamentals of graphic design so that each element could be practiced and incorporated into a routine and/or process for any given project. This focus on loose, generative process and making images in a brain-storming kind of way enhanced the practicality of visually conveying meaning and/or a message in our culture.

Images are separated into two types: denotative and connotative. Denotative are the literal depictions of the subject or the quintessential essence of what makes a thing recognizable as what it is. Connotative images express ideas by expanding upon the subject matter perhaps in a more metaphorical manner.  Both can range in style and complexity, ranging from photo-realistic to abstract.

There is no one correct way to depict a subject and as such, the range of representation are seemingly infinite. This course encourages designers to experiment with techniques in a generative and iterative fashion (i.e. make lots of things in as many ways as possible).
